Mazda BT-50

2026-10-20 14:50:00

The Mazda BT-50 is a global one-tonne pick-up truck under the Mazda brand. As an overseas market exclusive, it has yet to be officially introduced to the Chinese market. The first-generation BT-50 debuted in 2006 as a mechanical twin to the Ford Ranger. In its third generation (2020), the model shifted to a joint development with Isuzu, adopting the Isuzu D-MAX platform. The 2025 BT-50 represents the mid-life facelift for this generation, bringing comprehensive upgrades across exterior styling, interior appointments, active safety systems, and infotainment technology.

Model Overview

Positioned as a one-tonne pick-up truck, the BT-50 serves as a global strategic model for Mazda. Its primary appeal lies in marrying Mazda’s signature "Kodo" design language with Isuzu’s proven, dependable diesel powertrains and ladder-frame chassis, delivering passenger car-like refinement and tech without sacrificing pick-up utility. Key markets for the model currently include Australia, Thailand, the Philippines, South Africa, and Mexico. In Australia, the 2025 model is priced from AUD 36,400 (approx. RM165,000) to AUD 71,500 (approx. RM324,000) for the flagship variant. In Thailand, prices range between THB 762,000 and THB 1,352,000. The model is offered in Single Cab, Extended Cab (Freestyle Cab), and Double Cab body styles, with a choice of 4x2 rear-wheel drive and 4x4 four-wheel drive configurations.

Design Language

The exterior of the 2025 BT-50 receives a major refresh, integrating Mazda's "Kodo" design philosophy more comprehensively. Up front, a brand-new, larger signature wing grille is paired with sharper LED headlamps, featuring LED daytime running lights (DRLs) styled closely after the Mazda CX-5. The front bumper has been reprofiled with integrated side air curtains to improve aerodynamic efficiency and enhance fuel economy. The top-tier SP variant further gains distinctive red accent striping on the front grille. At the rear, the tailgate features an enlarged Mazda emblem and new ridged surfacing, complemented by redesigned LED combination taillights. The 2025 model also introduces three new exterior paint options: Red Earth Metallic, Sailing Blue Metallic, and Geode White Pearl.

Inside, the 2025 BT-50 benefits from an equally substantial upgrade. The cabin is fitted with a new 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment unit and a 7.0-inch digital instrument display. Material quality has also been elevated, with upgraded soft-touch trims across the door panels and centre console. Range-topping models feature black and terracotta Maztex synthetic leather upholstery paired with suede inserts, finished with embroidered "BT-50" lettering on the front headrests.

Powertrain and Performance

The 2025 Mazda BT-50 continues to offer a range of turbo-diesel engine options. Higher-spec variants are powered by the Isuzu-sourced 4JJ3-TCX 3.0-litre inline-four turbodiesel engine. Equipped with a variable-geometry turbocharger (VGS) and high-pressure common-rail direct injection, it delivers a maximum output of 188 hp (140 kW) and a peak torque of 450 Nm, with peak torque sustained across a wide band from 1,600 rpm to 2,600 rpm. Selected markets also offer a 1.9-litre turbodiesel unit (148 hp / 350 Nm). In markets such as Thailand, a heavily revised 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine replaces the previous 1.9-litre unit, producing 163 PS and 400 Nm of torque. Drivetrain duty is handled by an Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission as standard across the range, with a 6-speed manual gearbox retained in selected markets.

Chassis and Handling

The BT-50 is underpinned by a heavy-duty ladder-frame chassis. The suspension setup consists of an independent double wishbone layout up front and leaf springs with a rigid axle at the rear. Although sharing its platform architecture with the Isuzu D-MAX, Mazda has implemented bespoke suspension tuning to deliver a more compliant, passenger car-like ride. Drivetrain choices include rear-wheel drive (4x2) and four-wheel drive (4x4). The 4x4 setup utilizes a part-time four-wheel drive system with 4H (High Range) and 4L (Low Range) modes, alongside a rear differential lock on selected variants. 4x4 models are also equipped with a dedicated Rough Terrain off-road mode. In terms of capability, the BT-50 boasts a payload rating of approximately 1.22 tonnes and a maximum braked towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes.

Cabin and Equipment

The 2025 BT-50’s cabin takes a significant step forward in passenger-car comfort. The centrepiece is the new 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display, featuring an updated operating system that now supports wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto connectivity. The central screen also functions as an off-road display, showing real-time steering angle, pitch and roll angles, tyre pressure monitoring (TPMS), differential lock status, and active terrain modes. The instrument cluster integrates a 7.0-inch multi-info display. Cabin convenience features include dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry with push-start, satellite navigation, and newly added USB-C charging ports.

Safety and Driver Assistance

The 2025 BT-50 receives a major overhaul of its active safety and driver assistance suite. The pick-up is equipped with an upgraded Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), including: Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop & Go (Traffic Jam Assist), Lane Keep Assist (LKA) (with unmarked road-edge detection), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) (upgraded with motorcycle and junction pedestrian detection), Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) with Auto Braking, and Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) with Intelligent Speed Assist. These systems are powered by a new front stereo camera offering double the field of view. On the passive safety front, the BT-50 holds a 5-star ANCAP safety rating.

Market Performance and Outlook

The Mazda BT-50 maintains a steady performance across key global pick-up truck markets. In Australia, the model recorded 17,526 sales in 2023, outpacing competitors in the segment including the Mitsubishi Triton, Nissan Navara, and Volkswagen Amarok. However, in New Zealand, the BT-50 was withdrawn in 2024 due to stringent local emission regulations. Representing the most comprehensive update in four years, the 2025 facelift sharpens the BT-50's competitive edge via a fully revamped exterior, a tech-forward interior, and an enhanced ADAS safety suite. By combining Mazda’s distinct design identity with Isuzu’s proven commercial truck reliability, the BT-50 continues to hold a unique and compelling position in the fiercely contested one-tonne pick-up segment.
